BS6 Emission Regulations – Complete Guide for Automobile Professionals
Complete guide to Bharat Stage 6 (BS6) emission regulations in India. Learn about BS6 norms, compliance requirements, technology changes, diagnostic impact, and service implications.
In this guide
Introduction to BS6 Emission Standards
Bharat Stage 6 (BS6) emission norms came into full effect in India from April 2020, leapfrogging from BS4 directly to BS6. These standards align closely with Euro 6 regulations and mandate significant reductions in pollutant emissions. BS6 norms require a 68% reduction in NOx (Nitrogen Oxides) for petrol engines and 87% for diesel engines, along with a 82% reduction in PM (Particulate Matter) for diesel engines. The transition represented one of the biggest technological shifts in the Indian automobile industry.
Key Technology Changes for BS6 Compliance
BS6 compliance necessitated major engineering changes. For petrol engines: improved engine management systems, enhanced catalytic converters with higher precious metal loading, and evaporative emission control systems. For diesel engines: Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) with AdBlue injection, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system upgrades, and Lean NOx Traps (LNT). On-board diagnostics (OBD-II) became mandatory for monitoring emission system performance in real-time.
BS6 Impact on Vehicle Performance and Maintenance
BS6 vehicles require higher quality fuel — low sulphur (10 ppm max). Diesel vehicles equipped with DPF require periodic regeneration cycles where the filter burns off accumulated soot at high temperatures. AdBlue (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) needs regular top-ups, typically every 5,000-10,000 km. Service technicians must understand DPF regeneration procedures, SCR system diagnostics, and OBD fault code interpretation. Using incorrect engine oil (wrong Ash content) can damage DPF systems.
Diagnostic Procedures for BS6 Systems
Modern BS6 vehicles generate extensive diagnostic data through the OBD-II port. Technicians need advanced diagnostic scanners capable of reading manufacturer-specific codes for emission systems. Common diagnostic procedures include: DPF soot load measurement and forced regeneration, SCR system efficiency testing (NOx sensor readings), EGR flow rate monitoring, oxygen sensor heater circuit testing, and evaporative system leak detection. Understanding live data parameters is essential for accurate diagnosis.
Service Implications and Training Requirements
BS6 technology requires dealership service departments to invest in new equipment (diagnostic scanners, DPF cleaning machines, AdBlue dispensing systems) and technician training. All major manufacturers provide BS6-specific training covering: new component identification, diagnostic procedures, service interval changes, warranty claim handling for emission components, and customer communication about new maintenance requirements. ASDC and manufacturer-certified training programs are available for technicians.
Frequently Asked Questions
BS6 norms are significantly stricter than BS4 — reducing NOx emissions by 68% for petrol and 87% for diesel engines, and PM by 82% for diesel. BS6 also mandates OBD-II, stricter evaporative emission controls, and requires low-sulphur fuel (10 ppm vs 50 ppm).
No, BS4 vehicles cannot be upgraded to BS6 compliance through retrofitting. The required changes — engine control unit, exhaust system, fuel system, and OBD — are too extensive and integrated. Vehicle owners must continue using BS4 vehicles or purchase new BS6 vehicles.
AdBlue is a urea-based Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) injected into the exhaust stream of BS6 diesel engines. It breaks down NOx into harmless nitrogen and water vapor through a catalytic process called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). Consumption averages 3-5% of diesel consumption.
